Polyvalent GPRS modem: New DinBox GPRS SL
The DinBox GPRS SL modem is a compact (22.5/75.0/107.5 mm) serial V.24 RS-232/RS485 modem in a DINrail housing. The integrated IEC 60870-5-104 slave protocol and Modbus mapping offer an ideal solution to connect to PLC's, metering devices and power quality measurement equipment over RS-232/485. Other applications on demand can also be integrated in OpenAT in the Sierra Wireless SL6087 GPRS module. Several GSM & GPRS communication scenario's are possible.
1. IEC 60870-5-104 slave functionality over GPRS
The IEC 60870-5-104 MASTER SCADA system communicates with the DinBox GSM SL over GPRS. Modbus mapping over RS232 or RS485 ensures data retrieval from the (power quality) meter, PLC or other industrial device. In this way the DinBox GSM SL is a very elegant solution to upgrade all your equipment in the field to the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol.

2. Transparent communication: traditional 'CSD data' modem
The modem is serially connected to a meter, PLC or power quality equipment and can be configured in ‘CSD data mode'. This means you can communicate over GSM using 'CSD data' to reach your device or central management. 3. Transparent communication: ‘Socket server' and ‘Socket client' mode
The modem is serially connected to a meter, PLC or power quality equipment and can be configured in ‘Socket server' or ‘Socket client' mode. This means you can communicate over GPRS using IP numbers to reach your device or central management. 4. Transparent communication: Retrofitting your PSTN modem infrastructure to IP-based communication
You can use the DinBox GPRS SL modem to replace your PSTN modem by an IP communication solution over GPRS without changing the initial, transparent, serial set-up. The serial device will for instance ‘expect' or generate a 9600 bps CONNECT to the modem as if it was a PSTN modem, the DinBox GPRS SL however will be using the IP infrastructure to communicate to the MASTER office.

5. Transparent communication: Overview of communication to RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces
The backoffice can reach the meter, power quality equipment, or industrial PC through a transparent GSM or GPRS connection using the RS-232 or RS-485 interfaces. Next to a traditional 'circuit switched' communication by GSM, a 'packet switched' communication by GPRS is possible. Additionally to the GSM communication (dial in or out) it is possible to attribute different IP port numbers to the RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces differentiating two applications or you can appoint the same IP port number to the two serial interfaces.

6. The Praxis Modem Management System
The DinBox GSM SL modem infrastructure in the field can be managed by the Praxis Modem Management System which allows you to group modems by operator, Baud speed, RSSI signal and change from CSD data to GPRS and vice versa.
