The ICON/IMINDS project GreenWeCan involves a seamless Wireless Sensor (WSN) and WiFi network (WLAN) for the city of Ghent (Belgium) as a part of the European Smart Cities program. Both network parts will be able to offer innovative services integrated into several geospatial applications by aggregating data from multiple sources. Much attention will be paid to "green" aspects: human exposure to radiation and energy consumption savings. To validate and analyze this a demonstrator network will be built. The aim is to collect various sensor data in the city and to transfer this information to the network backplane offering service apps for administration, citizens and tourists.

On the 19th of September a 'VIP' tour will follow the 'data route' in the city of Ghent showing the application and communication media, closing the project officially. The project partners are One Access (6 Low Pan 169 MHZ TCP/IP software), Bausch Datacom (WSN hardware), Stad Ghent, BeMobile (smart Phone apps) and Androme.

In particular, parking spaces for disabled people will be equipped with disks detecting presence of cars through magnetic field and infrared sensors. This data will be communicated over RF 169 MHz to the intermediate nodes and gateways routing the TCP/IP information to the databases. Through the (WiFi) network this information will be available for f.i. smartphone users.
Also, waste bins will be equipped with magnet controlled reed switch in order to detect opening and closing of the lid. This aims to fine-tune pick-up routes of garbage collection. The local garbage collecting entity IVAGO is interested in using this information to perfect pick-up routes.
The max. distances in this setup between the 169 MHz nodes and the 169 MHz gateway are approx. 250-500 meters, but bigger distances should be easily possible depending on environment, antennas etc.
